Hairdressers around Australia submitted their entries to the Colour Outside the Lines competition last month, a competition that saw an incredible array of creative entries from Paul Mitchell salons all over the world. Entrants were asked to style a model and create a cut using Paul Mitchell Professional Colour products. What we saw, was a wild and vivid collection of entries that used colours from Platinum Card to Pistachio to Petal Pink.

Below, we’ve featured some of our favourite entries from around the world, along with our very own Australian finalists (of which, we’re very proud!).  We love the way you get a sense of the style and creativity that comes into play in different countries, and the different fashions that are circling the globe.

What we’re most proud of is our Australian entries, who were right on par with the best in the world. Our Daniel Fortino (Hennesy Lane), Carly Johnson (Hennesy Lane), and Lauren Harris (KAWSA), showed immaculate attention to detail, and showed a great understanding of the conceptual elements required to create stand out cuts.

The work of Daniel, Carly, and Lauren is featured below, along with some of our favourite entries from around the world.

WINNER

Final2

Daniel Fortino /
Hennesy Lane Hair

Hennesy Lane Hair has again established itself as one of the country’s leading salons, with our top two entries this year. Daniel Fortino’s entry was particularly impressive, both in creativity and execution. Daniel wanted to create a look that mimicked that of oil on a wet road.

“I wanted to create that illusion when oil has spilled onto concrete, that rainbow metallic sheen effect when the light hits the concrete,” he said. In order to achieve the style, he used a range of Paul Mitchell products. “I used a foiling technique on the fringe, placing colour at the root of the foil and then changing colours throughout the mid lengths. I created depth in between with grey, to create the oil spill illusion.”

The style was then photographed by Nick Walters. Aesthetically, the dark colours contrast beautifully with the vivid colours in the hair, and the photograph finds a unique place among the international entries.

SECOND PLACE

Final-(1)2

Carly Johnson  /
Hennesy Lane Hair

Carly Johnson from Hennessy Lane (again!) found a style of her own, taking inspiration from the soft glowing colours of the Northern Lights in Alaska. She was able to create a seamless and effortless blend between green, red, gold, orange, and blue, while maintaining a sense of simplicity and style.

“My inspiration came from the Northern Lights of Alaska, where shades of greens, dusty pinks, and seducing golds blend effortlessly together. It’s definitely a place on my bucket list,” she said. She achieved the look by carefully blending the colours and really thinking about the placement of colours throughout. “I alternated colours, too. Sometimes in the one foil,” she said.

THIRD PLACE

Lauren Harris /
KAWSA

In third place, Lauren Harris continues to impress with her innovation and style. She’s been featured more than once on the Paul Mitchell Australia Instagram feed, because of the way she so effortlessly combines colour with modern style and technique. Harris, from one of Melbourne’s premier salons, KAWSA Hair in Balwyn North, said she wanted to create a high fashion look for the competition. “I wanted to create a colour combination that looked so delicious you could eat it (without feeling guilty),” she said. “So I used bubblegum pink with a dash of grey, shimmering Amethyst,  Pistachio Green with a hint of silver, and pretty Petal Pink.”

Here final entry was photographed by Israel Best, with makeup by Vivienne Roche. It was a colourful addition to the competition, and certainly looked comfortable when compared to the other finalists throughout Europe and The USA.

Congratulations Lauren!
